  • Many Scandinavian designers of the 1950s and 60s often drew inspiration from very old furniture. They had a keen ability to recognize the design and craftsmanship qualities of antique pieces and frequently revived furniture from the past. In the case of Poul Hundevad, it was a chair from a very distant past that led to his greatest success.

Scandinavian furniture designer and producer Poul Buch Hundevad was born in the town of Vamdrup in 17. After training as a carpenter, he also worked as a joiner before founding his cabinetmaking company and a furniture manufacturing factory called Hundevad & Co., in the 1950s in Vamdrup.

The piece that made him famous is a chair called the Guldhøj Chair. This chair was a huge success. It is based on the discovery of a very ancient chair dating back to the Scandinavian Bronze Age (1400 BC). Poul Hundevad's reinterpretation of it was then exported all over the world. 15,000 copies were produced, and it is still in production today.

Poul Buch Hundevad also produced many other pieces of furniture, often in collaboration with other leading names in Scandinavian design. These included sideboards, tables, and modular shelving units.
